Core Curriculum

Wharton’s MBA core curriculum is designed to give you a strong foundation in business while allowing you the flexibility to tailor your studies.

You’ll complete 9.5 credit units of core courses, divided into two parts:

  • Fixed Core (3.25 credit units):These are essential courses taken in your first semester, covering key business fundamentals.

  • Flexible Core (6.25 credit units):These can be taken in your first year or later, letting you choose the order and timing based on your goals. This flexibility helps you take more electives early on — perfect for preparing for internships, global experiences, or launching a venture.

Courses are offered as quarter- or semester-long, and span core management topics like finance, marketing, operations, leadership, and more.

Majors

You can select from 18 MBA concentrations to pursue your goals. Most majors consist of five CUs—usually four CUs in addition to the core curriculum. Courses may count toward more than one major, giving you the option to pursue your MBA with a double major.

Electives

Choose your own areas of study. Choose from nearly 200 courses across 10 academic departments, plus many more offered through Penn’s other 11 world-class schools. With so much to choose from you can tailor the curriculum to your goals.

Your knowledge from Wharton’s core curriculum is supplemented by the broad range of elective courses. Some electives will count toward your major, but you’ll have room to take some chances and explore new topics.

Scholarships

Third Party Scholarships

An organization (i.e. public or private sector sponsor including military agencies, educational institutions, international embassies, or state prepaid tuition programs) can commit to pay your educational expenses. The University of Pennsylvania will bill outside organizations (sponsors) by preparing a separate invoice listing your tuition, fees, and other charges. Third Party sponsorships count in the determination of student loan amount eligibility. Fellowship funding may also reduce the amount of sponsorship funding a student may receive based on funding restrictions.

External Scholarships

They encourage all students to explore scholarship opportunities made available by companies, clubs, organizations, and/or corporations with whom they may be affiliated.
